Plas Madoc Communities First (PMCF)

Why is PMCF needed?

While there may be other wards in Wales with lower average income (as an example) than Plas Madoc, the overall combination of deprivation indicators for the estate is much more limiting to the community - Plas Madoc's presently ranks as the 3rd most deprived ward in Wales according to the Index of Multiple Deprivations 2000 (IMD). This index has been used by the Welsh Assembly Government to identify the wards that it will provide additional support to under the Communities First Programme. The index is produced by combining a number of different "indicators" which have been specifically chosen to allow comparison between different areas. Please see the Strategy & Action Plan to find further information on the IMD.

In Plas Madoc there are major limitations of services in areas such as General & Dental Practitioners, transport, play and entertainment facilities, in venues offering social events/gatherings, and in supermarket and other retail facilities. Challenges also exist in education and local employment opportunities, in environment and housing, in childcare and full time day care.

The role of PMCF is to support the community in addressing the areas where services are lacking. This may mean seeking funding to provide a new service or working in partnership with other organisations and the local authority to direct services and assistance into the area. The aim is to ensure that the community is represented at all stages to ensure that confidence, skills and knowledge are increased and maintained within the community to allow for long term sustainability.
